What you will need to survive a complete economic, financial and political melt down

In my previous post, How to survive this economic crisis, I talked about surviving this economic crash from a wealth management point of view. This post is about surviving a the total economic, financial and political melt down as in the collapse of the entire banking system, people rising up against local, regional and national governments and the failure of infrastructure - power, water and non-solar powered communications.

I came across this video this morning from thenewsurvivalist. Doc provides very good information surviving a complete breakdown of society by moving to a rural area where you may grow your own food. He also explains the importance of having gold and silver coins as well as unlikely sources of silver coins that may still be found in circulation.

However, he does not cover emergency power to run the fridge and freezer for preserving the food. Something else to consider is solar power. It Maybe too late and costly to install a complete home solution but there a company called Voltaic Systems that sells backpacks with solar panels, complete with battery backup and all necessary wiring and systems for charging electronic devices including laptops. These backpacks are ideal for camping but may be used as emergency power for charging electronic devices and for providing temporary lighting.

The main points to consider are:
  • move to a rural area where you may grow your own food as well as trade with neighbors for products or services you may need
  • have at least two alternate sources of power like solar, wind and gasoline powered generators
  • have alternatives to cash, credit and debit, like gold and silver as the banks may not be operating
Please add other suggestions and comments below.
